How to Spend a Day in Old Town

It’s easy to fill a day wandering Fort Collins’ historic downtown, nicknamed “Old Town.”

BREAKFAST

Start with breakfast at one of the city’s oldest restaurants, the Silver Grill. Be sure to get one of their famous cinnamon rolls. Or, if you prefer breakfast-on-the-go, stop at The Exchange for a locally made breakfast burrito from Vatos Tacos or a ‘Colorado Style’ donut and hot espresso from FoCo DoCo.

ACTIVITIES

Next, take a stroll downtown and look at the buildings around you for old ghost signs—a term which references 50+-year-old signs painted on the exterior of buildings that offer insight into their history…not spirits. Walnut Street features multiple buildings that inspired Downtown Disney. My favorite is the old firehouse which looks straight out of a story book with its vibrant colors. It now houses Happy Lucky’s Teahouse (where you can find over 200 loose-leaf teas). I recommend their Cinnamon-Orange blend. Right next door is Old Firehouse Books. Grab one of their recommended books and sip your tea.

SHOPPING

If you’re in a shopping mood, you can’t miss Akinz. Handmade is their motto, From beanies to custom print designs, Akinz captures the feel of Fort Collins on all their apparel. Next stop: Bloom. This cute flower boutique is an oasis. Tell Cindy, the owner, who you’re gifting flowers to and she’ll craft a custom arrangement! From there, head to a true Fort Collins staple, The Cupboard. With two stories of gadgets, cookware and local food, you won’t leave empty handed. A few doors down you’ll discover more spices than you can imagine at Old Town Spice Shop. Popcorn seasoning, BBQ rubs, and so many unique blends. My personal favorite is the Red Mountain blend, which is named after Red Mountain Open Space, an excellent hiking location located just north of the city.

Spring Park

Located along Spring Creek Trail, Spring Park, established in 1965, is one of the older parks in Fort Collins. At the park you’ll find the obligatory playground equipment, as well as two youth baseball fields, but you’ll also find a large green space filled with trees. Don’t get us wrong, if you’d like to take the kids somewhere to play, the playground is certainly nice, but what we really like about Spring Park is the serenity that comes from so much green space.

Those who live in Indian Hills or South College Heights (both adjacent to the park) likely know this park well – but if you’re not in one of these subdivisions, or if you’ve never been to the park, we suggest you travel to Spring Park on your bike, via Spring Creek Trail. You’ll love the ride and you’ll find no better place to stop for a nice, peaceful rest.

Hampshire Pond

If you’re considering a move to Fort Collins, or even a move within Fort Collins, and if you like the outdoors, we suggest you take a peek at Hampshire Pond

Consisting of just three square blocks, Hampshire Pond, located immediately south of Drake Rd and just to the west of Taft Hill Rd, is, at first glance, nondescript. Zoom out just a bit, though, and you’ll quickly realize what makes this little subdivision so special. If you were to explore Hampshire Pond you would find, at the south edge, two little paths. These innocuous paths, in this seemingly average little neighborhood, lead to Spring Creek Trail. This may not seem like much until you spend even a few minutes exploring the trail. Along the trail you will find parks, open space, beautiful trees, multiple creek crossings, lovely views, and yes, Dairy Queen. If you’re considering a move to Fort Collins, or even a move within Fort Collins, and if you like the outdoors, we suggest you take a peek at Hampshire Pond — it really is a wonderful little neighborhood.

Horsetooth Mountain Open Space & Horsetooth Reservoir

Horsetooth Mountain Open Space, located four miles west of Fort Collins, covers 2,711 acres, includes 29 miles of hiking/biking trails, and ranges in elevation from 5,430 to 7,255 feet. With Horsetooth Rock as its most prominent landmark, Horsetooth Open Space offers a quick outdoor getaway for Northern Colorado residents and visitors. A hike might lead you to Horsetooth Falls or all the way to Horsetooth Rock, where you will find magnificent views of Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir, and Longs Peak (on a clear day). Take advantage of living along the foothills of the Rocky Mountains and enjoy a day (or even just a couple of hours!) at Horsetooth Mountain Open Space.

Horsetooth Reservoir, in Fort Collins, Colorado, offers 6.5 miles of water recreation. Open for boating, fishing, waterskiing, camping, hiking, horseback riding, picnicking, swimming and even scuba diving, Horsetooth Reservoir is a popular destination for Northern Colorado residents and visitors. Horsetooth Reservoir is home to annual events such as the Team Fort Collins Openwater Swim, with a 10K, 2.4-mile, 1.2-mile, and youth races. Both Campgrounds and Cabins are available for reservation year-round, and a recent addition to the park is the South Bay Group Pavilion at Horsetooth Reservoir, which can be reserved for events and gatherings. Just a short drive (or challenging bike ride!) from Fort Collins, Horsetooth Reservoir has much to offer for outdoor and water enthusiasts.

Rolland Moore Park

Rolland Moore Park has grown into a beautiful space in west-central Fort Collins. Ride or walk along tree-lined Spring Creek Trail, which winds its way through the north and west borders of the park. With mature trees and foliage, tennis, racquetball and basketball courts, volleyball pits, shelters, open green space, baseball fields, and two playgrounds, Rolland Moore Park is at the heart of outdoor activity in Fort Collins. It’s a great place to take in a baseball game on a warm summer evening or to enjoy a quiet picnic and a game of Frisbee with your family. In the spring and fall, you’ll find kids soccer games on weekend mornings and early afternoons. Rolland Moore Park is another of Fort Collins’ fantastic city parks, and one not to miss!

Spring Canyon Park

Spring Canyon Park, located in southwest Fort Collins, is part of the city’s wonderful collection of city parks. Nestled against the beautiful backdrop of Horsetooth Rock and the foothills, Spring Canyon Park has something for every member of your family. Many will arrive at Spring Canyon Park on a bike by way of Spring Creek Trail (west) to the north, or Fossil Creek Trail to the south. Boasting an impressive collection of playground equipment including a slide built into the rock hill, a large “fort,” and several slides, swings, ladders and bridges, Spring Canyon Park is also home to Inspiration Playground, which features an environment and equipment accessible to children of all ages and abilities. Spring Canyon also features baseball fields, tennis courts, volleyball pits, basketball courts, a skate park, and large shelters with picnic tables. There are even water features for the kids in the summer, and a large dog park located near the parks south entrance. Located in south Fort Collins, Brittany Knolls is just down the street from Southridge Golf Course, only a few miles from Front Range Village, and about 4 miles west of I-25.
You’ll find Brittany Knolls west of Lemay Ave, north of Trilby Rd, east of College Ave, and just to the south of Fossil Creek Park.

Brittany Knolls is mostly made up of Two Story and Ranch style home, but there are a few Split-Level homes mixed in as well.
